Introduction

Buying or selling a used vehicle can be a hassle-free experience if you follow the right steps and procedures. However, many people are unaware of the legal requirements and end up facing problems later on. One of the common mistakes that people make is not transferring the ownership of the vehicle properly. This can lead to issues such as fines, penalties, disputes, frauds, or even legal action.

To avoid such complications, you need to download and submit Form 29 and Form 30 Parivahan, which are the official forms for notifying the transfer of ownership of a motor vehicle. These forms are issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) and are available on their website . You can also get them from your local Regional Transport Office (RTO).

What are Form 29 and Form 30 Parivahan?

Form 29 and Form 30 Parivahan are the forms that you need to fill and submit when you want to transfer the ownership of a motor vehicle from one person to another. These forms contain the details of the transferor (seller), transferee (buyer), vehicle, and transaction. They also serve as a proof of intimation and consent for the transfer of ownership.

Form 29 is the notice of transfer of ownership of a motor vehicle. It is to be made in duplicate and submitted by the transferor (seller) to the RTO where the vehicle is registered. The duplicate copy with the endorsement of the RTO is to be returned to the transferor. Form 29 also contains a declaration by the transferor that they have not suspended or cancelled the registration certificate (RC) of the vehicle.

Form 30 is the application for intimation and transfer of ownership of a motor vehicle. It is also to be made in duplicate and submitted by the transferee (buyer) to the RTO where the vehicle is registered. The duplicate copy with the endorsement of the RTO is to be returned to the transferee. Form 30 also contains a declaration by the transferee that they have purchased the vehicle from the transferor and request for recording their name as the registered owner.

Why do you need to download and submit Form 29 and Form 30 Parivahan?

You need to download and submit Form 29 and Form 30 Parivahan for two main reasons:

  • To comply with the legal requirements under Section 50 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 , which states that whenever a person transfers or acquires ownership of a motor vehicle, they shall report it within a specified time period to their respective RTOs.

  • To update your records with the RTO and avoid any future problems or liabilities related to the vehicle. For example, if you sell your vehicle but do not transfer the ownership, you may still be held responsible for any accidents, offences, taxes, or fines involving the vehicle. Similarly, if you buy a vehicle but do not transfer the ownership, you may not be able to claim insurance, registration, or other benefits related to the vehicle.

Therefore, it is advisable to download and submit Form 29 and Form 30 Parivahan as soon as possible after the sale or purchase of a used vehicle.
